What Types Of Evaporator(Heat Exchange) For Industrial Scroll Chiller

2024-04-12

An industrial scroll chiller is a chiller with scroll compressor such as Panasonic/Danfoss ,which is an important machine for any business that requires efficient cooling. In the chiller systems, the evaporator is the main part that transfers the cooling energy from cold refrigerant(gas) to water or other coolant. There are three main types of evaporator for industrial scroll chillers:stainless steel coil in water tank type, shell and tube type and stainless steel plate type. But how to choose the right type of evaporator is critical for optimizing the efficiency of a chiller system. In this article, we will discuss the three most common types of evaporators for industrial scroll chillers.

1. Stainless Steel Coil in Water Tank Evaporator

The stainless steel coil in water tank evaporator, also called a immersion-type heat exchange or open type heat exchange, is the most common type of evaporator found in industrial scroll chillers. This evaporator type consists of a coil submerged in a water tank. During operation, the refrigerant flows through the coil, which draws heat from the water in the tank, thus cooling it down.

This type of evaporator is relatively easy to install and maintain, and can handle a wide range of cooling loads. However, it is not the most efficient option in terms of energy usage, and may require more frequent cleaning due to potential mineral buildup in the water tank. If user don’t have buffer water tank at their site , the chiller manufacturer will help user to choose this type evaporator , as the tank is built in the chiller, which is easily installed when user receive the chiller.

2. Shell and Tube Evaporator

The shell and tube evaporator is a more complex and expensive option, but is also more efficient than the coil in water tank type. This evaporator consists of a series of tubes bundled together inside a metal shell. During operation, the refrigerant flows through the tubes while the water flows around the tubes in the shell, allowing for more efficient heat transfer.

The shell and tube evaporator is ideal for larger industrial scroll chiller systems, as it can handle higher flow rates and temperature differentials. However, it also requires more space,so generally ,if the chiller is with shell and tube evaporator , there is no built with water tank inside the chiller ,users need connect with buffer water tank at their sites .

3. Stainless Steel Plate Type Evaporator

The stainless steel plate type evaporator is a highly efficient option that is commonly used in small and medium-sized industrial scroll chillers. This evaporator type consists of a series of metal plates stacked together with small channels between them. During operation, the refrigerant flows through these channels while the water flows on the opposite side of the plates, allowing for efficient heat exchange.

The plate type evaporator is compact, easy to install, and requires minimal maintenance. However, it may not be suitable for high flow rates and larger temperature differentials, and may be more susceptible to fouling due to the narrow channels between the plates.

Choosing the right type of evaporator is an important factor in optimizing the efficiency and performance of an industrial scroll chiller. The stainless steel coil in water tank evaporator is the most common and versatile option, while the shell and tube and plate type evaporators offer higher efficiency for larger and smaller systems, respectively. When selecting an evaporator for chiller, it is important to consider factors such as space requirements, maintenance needs, installation and flow rates to ensure optimal performance and longevity, Tongwei will suggest the most suitable solution as per your actual conditions.
