Since the customer already has an existing water cooling tower that can be connected to the chiller, they chose a water-cooled chiller solution for their production line.
This industrial chiller provides 100 kW (360,000 BTU/h) cooling capacity and is equipped with an internal water tank and water pump according to the customer's requirements. More importantly, the chiller uses a shell-and-tube evaporator instead of a coil evaporator. Compared with coil evaporators, shell-and-tube evaporators offer excellent durability, lower risk of refrigerant leakage, and superior heat transfer performance, making them suitable for demanding industrial cooling applications.
Tongwei designed this 30 TR industrial water-cooled chiller with a 440V, 60Hz, 3-phase power supply to meet the customer's local electrical requirements. The refrigeration system is equipped with three Panasonic scroll compressors and uses R407C refrigerant, providing stable and reliable cooling performance for continuous plastic film co-extrusion production.
An industrial chiller has become an indispensable auxiliary cooling machine for modern plastic film co-extrusion lines. The co-extrusion production process involves melting, compounding, stretching, and shaping multiple layers of plastic materials at high temperatures. Precise and stable cooling is essential for maintaining smooth production and ensuring consistent finished-film quality.
Without a professional water cooling system for accurate temperature control, the production line may experience unstable process parameters, increased product defects, reduced production efficiency, and shortened equipment service life. The key reasons why end users need an industrial chiller for their plastic film co-extrusion line are as follows.
Plastic film co-extrusion requires strict temperature control of the cooling roller, die head, and forming system. After multiple layers of plastic are melted and compounded, the film requires uniform and rapid heat dissipation to complete the forming process.
Industrial chillers provide constant-temperature circulating cooling water with stable water temperature and a small temperature difference. This allows manufacturers to effectively control the cooling speed of the film surface, avoiding uneven cooling caused by natural cooling or air cooling.
Stable temperature control helps ensure film flatness, uniform thickness, and reliable lamination of multi-layer co-extruded films. It also significantly reduces the risk of film warping, wrinkling, thickness deviation, and layer separation.
A plastic film co-extrusion line is a typical continuous industrial production system designed for long-hour operation. A significant amount of heat is generated during extrusion friction, material melting, and cooling roller operation.
Conventional cooling methods may not be able to remove accumulated process heat quickly enough, which can slow down film forming and limit production capacity. Industrial chillers provide high cooling efficiency and stable heat dissipation, continuously removing process heat from the production system.
By maintaining stable process temperatures, an industrial chiller can accelerate film curing and shaping, support long-term continuous operation, and improve the overall production output and operating efficiency of the co-extrusion line.
The quality and physical properties of co-extruded plastic films are highly sensitive to cooling temperature and cooling uniformity. Unstable cooling can result in an inconsistent internal molecular structure, leading to poor transparency, reduced tensile strength, increased brittleness, and poor weather resistance.
With accurate circulating water temperature control, a water-cooled industrial chiller helps plastic materials form a more uniform and stable structure during the cooling and shaping process.
This can improve the film's flatness, transparency, toughness, stretch resistance, and overall product consistency, helping manufacturers meet the quality requirements of packaging films, industrial composite films, and other high-performance plastic film products.
Long-term high-temperature operation can cause thermal aging and accelerated wear of key components in a plastic film co-extrusion line, including extrusion screws, molds, cooling rollers, and transmission components.
Excessive equipment temperatures can also increase mechanical failure rates and accelerate the aging of electrical components. A water-cooled industrial chiller continuously stabilizes the operating temperature of critical production equipment, helping prevent equipment damage and performance degradation caused by overheating.
By reducing excessive thermal stress and equipment wear, the chiller can help extend the service life of the co-extrusion production line while lowering maintenance and replacement costs.
Unstable cooling is one of the potential causes of defective products in plastic film co-extrusion production. Common defects may include bubbles, surface scratches, uneven lamination, edge curling, and dimensional deviations.
Large quantities of defective films can result in significant raw material waste and increased production costs. A stable industrial cooling system helps maintain consistent process temperatures and can reduce cooling-related product defects.
At the same time, efficient chiller operation can help reduce the energy consumption associated with the cooling process, allowing manufacturers to achieve more stable and cost-effective production.
Different plastic raw materials, such as PE, PP, PET, and PVC, have different melting points and cooling shrinkage characteristics. An industrial chiller can adjust the cooling water temperature and flow rate according to different material formulations, production speeds, and process requirements.
This flexibility allows the cooling system to adapt to two-layer, three-layer, five-layer, and other multi-layer co-extrusion processes. Stable temperature control helps different material layers achieve synchronized and consistent forming while reducing quality problems caused by differences in cooling and shrinkage rates.
For this Mexico customer, the factory already has an existing water cooling tower. Therefore, a water-cooled industrial chiller is an ideal choice because the cooling tower can be connected to the chiller's condenser water circuit to efficiently remove heat from the refrigeration system.
The 30 TR water-cooled chiller is designed according to the customer's specific production requirements and includes a 100 kW (360,000 BTU/h) cooling capacity, internal water tank, water pump, shell-and-tube evaporator, three Panasonic scroll compressors, R407C refrigerant, and a 440V/60Hz/3Ph power supply.
The shell-and-tube evaporator is particularly suitable for industrial applications requiring reliable and long-term operation. Its robust construction provides excellent heat transfer performance and helps reduce the risk of leakage compared with conventional coil evaporator designs.
If your factory already has a cooling tower, a water-cooled industrial chiller can be an efficient solution for removing heat from the refrigeration system. It is particularly suitable for factories with established cooling-water infrastructure and continuous industrial cooling requirements.
If you do not have an existing water cooling tower, you can choose an air-cooled chiller. An air-cooled chiller is another common type of industrial chiller and uses air blowers and condenser coils to dissipate heat directly into the surrounding air, eliminating the need for a separate cooling tower.
The choice between an air-cooled chiller and a water-cooled chiller should be based on factors such as existing cooling infrastructure, installation conditions, ambient temperature, cooling capacity, operating environment, and long-term operating requirements.
This successful shipment of a 30 TR water-cooled industrial chiller to Mexico demonstrates Tongwei's ability to provide customized industrial cooling solutions for plastic film co-extrusion applications.
From cooling capacity and electrical specifications to evaporator design, water tank, water pump, compressors, and refrigerant selection, the chiller can be configured according to customers' specific production requirements.
